Mucopolysaccharidosis

Back to Glossary

Mucopolysaccharidosis

Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) is a group of inherited metabolic disorders caused by the deficiency of enzymes needed to break down glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). This leads to the accumulation of GAGs in tissues, causing progressive damage to organs and systems. Symptoms vary but often include skeletal abnormalities, developmental delays, and organ dysfunction. Treatment may involve enzyme replacement therapy and supportive care.
