Back to Glossary

Pilosebaceous Unit

The pilosebaceous unit consists of a hair follicle, sebaceous (oil) gland, and a small muscle called the arrector pili. It is responsible for hair production and sebum secretion, which lubricates and protects the skin. Disorders of the pilosebaceous unit include acne, folliculitis, and seborrheic dermatitis.
