Back to Glossary

Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis (PAP)

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is a rare lung disorder characterized by the accumulation of surfactant (a lipid-protein complex) in the alveoli, impairing gas exchange. Symptoms include shortness of breath, cough, and fatigue. Treatment options include whole lung lavage, inhaled or systemic therapies, and in severe cases, lung transplantation.
