Stratum Granulosum

Back to Glossary

Stratum Granulosum

The stratum granulosum is a layer of the epidermis located above the stratum spinosum. It consists of keratinocytes that contain granules of keratohyalin, a protein involved in the formation of keratin. This layer plays a crucial role in the process of keratinization, where cells lose their nuclei, become flattened, and eventually form the stratum corneum.
